North leads world with biometrics
A COMPANY at the forefront of fingerprint reading security says it is on the way to making the North-East a global centre for the technology. Newcastle-based UK Biometrics Ltd recently revealed plans to allocate a new UK franchise every month for the next 18 months as it unveiled proposals to create a £100m turnover business by 2010. Matthew James started UK Biometrics in the year 2000, in a small office with little capital, a telephone and a laptop. By 2004 he had funded growth from profit, begun to recruit his key management team and formed UK Biometrics Ltd, and recently the Killingworth firm has signed major overseas deals.

Biometrics Help Identify, Apprehend and Deter Illegal Migrants
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today that in the first year of operation, its biometrics at sea program has collected biometric data from 1,368 migrants, prosecuted 90 of those migrants, and helped reduce the flow of illegal migration by nearly 50 percent in the waters between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. This program, initiated last November, is an information sharing effort between US VISIT and the U.S. Coast Guard to address the challenge of identifying illegal migrants who are interdicted at sea. The success of the program has significantly advanced the effort to develop effective mobile solutions for biometric collection and analysis, and represents another step in the department's comprehensive strategy to secure the nation's borders.

Feds to Check More Migrant IDs at Sea
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The government is expanding a test program that matches fingerprints and photographs of illegal immigrants intercepted at sea with a federal database, U.S. officials announced Wednesday. The "biometrics-at-sea" program has been used since November 2006 in the dangerous Mona Pass between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. It will be used by Coast Guard vessels operating out of South Florida in spring 2008, said Coast Guard Rear Adm. Wayne Justice. "We've gotten the concept down in the Mona Pass," Justice said at a news conference. "We're taking a measured approach to expansion."

Palm-print biometrics aid Atlanta police
The Police Department of Atlanta, which makes 63,000 arrests per year, is getting a new kind of weapon to catch criminals: a workflow-based biometrics system that can scan palm prints in addition to fingerprints. “A lot of criminals will leave a palm print when they try to break into a car or door,” says Capt. Shirley Britton, chief of the Atlanta Police Deptartment. “The benefit of our new system is we can put the palm print into the system along with the fingerprints we now hold.”

US talks up biometric border protection
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed today that the first year of its Biometrics-at-Sea border protection programme has been a success and has accomplished its goals. Biometrics-at-Sea collected data from 1,368 migrants during the first 12 months of implementation. The programme enabled the prosecution of 90 offenders and reduced the flow of illegal migration by nearly 50 per cent in the waters between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, the DHS claimed. "The Coast Guard is charged with securing America's borders along more than 95,000 miles of coastline," said Wayne Justice, director of response policy at the DHS. "Biometric technology is an effective tool which will help increase maritime domain awareness through the positive identification of those we interdict.

London will den Feind besiegen
London.
