Only biometric passport holders allowed visa-free entry into US
SINGAPORE : The US embassy says passports issued or extended after 26 October 2006 must be biometric in order for Singaporeans to enjoy visa-free entry into the US. Holders of non-biometric passports who wish to travel to the US can check directly with the US Embassy on their entry requirements. Alternatively, they may consider applying for the biometric passport or BioPass to enjoy visa-free entry to the US. Singapore started issuing biometric passports since 15 August last year. ICA says non-biometric passports are still valid for travel. However, visa requirements are determined by the foreign immigration authorities concerned.

Residential biometric fingerprint locks target mass market
No key to lose or code to remember. Are they safe for your home? by Dave Young, News2 November 28, 2007 DENVER (KWGN) — We've been hearing about the technology for years now. Now that the prices are coming down the idea sounds great: a lock that reads your fingerprint. No key required. Nothing to lose or memorize. But are they ready to pass the test? "It's reading my finger and then what," I asked lock and security technician Elijah Lynn, while we demonstrated one of the units. "It scans your fingerprint," said Lynn, "It compares that to the algorithm stored in the memory and it's denied you," he added, as the machine's light turned red and refused to open. "Two-hundred dollars to a $1000 can get you a stand-alone biometric lock that uses batteries" said Lynn, "and will hold usually about 50 to 100 fingerprints. "

Biometric specialist claims that impact of HMRC incident could have been minimised
- VeCommerce says that reliance on personal data is a flawed and outdated concept that should be replaced Maidenhead, 28th November 2007, VeCommerce, an expert in designing and implementing voice self-service and speaker verification solutions believes that the loss of two disks containing the personal details of 25 million UK citizens by HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customers) office, would have been less cause for alarm, if it was possible to reduce the reliance on sensitive data to enable fraud.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/-- Atmel , a leader in secure biometric co-processor solutions, announced today that Kerry Maletsky, Business Unit Director, Advanced Products Group, will present "Secure Biometric Co-processor: Solving the Network Security Puzzle" at the Advanced Identification Systems/Commercial Biometrics Conference in Washington, DC, on November 30 at 11:30 am. Mr. Maletsky's talk focuses on the concerns surrounding biometric privacy and security in a network environment. Specifically, it addresses the effects of how the biometric system architecture and components affect the trust that networks and uses can place on the operation of the system. It further explores how the inclusion of a client hardware biometric co-processor can add both strong authentication and convenience in a network environment -- while maintaining the confidentiality of the users of and the confidence of the network provider.

Biometrics won't fix data loss problems
Six leading academics have written to a Parliamentary committee to express their dismay at the way biometrics has been used as a magic wand which would have supposedly stopped Darling's great data giveaway. The six said of claims by the Prime Minister and his Chancellor: "These assertions are based on a fairy-tale view of the capabilities of the technology and in addition, only deal with one aspect of the problems that this type of data breach causes." Both Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling claimed, after the loss of CDs containing 25m recipients of child benefit, that the data would somehow be protected by biometric information if we had national ID cards. The letter points out that this is based on three suppositions - that the entire UK population can be enrolled on the database; that no one can forge biometric information; and finally that every ID check would include checks against biometric information on the national database.

Using Biometrics to Deter Illegal Immigrants
The Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard report that their year-old biometrics-at-sea program has resulted in a nearly 50 percent reduction in the flow of illegal aliens from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic into the United States. The biometric technology allows the Coast Guard to digitally capture the fingerprints of illegal immigrants intercepted at sea. Instantly transmitted via satellite, the prints can be compared to the US-VISIT system's database of known criminals and immigration violators.

Sagem Sécurité and Psion Teklogix partner on biometrics
Biometric mobile computing devices are one step closer, following the signing of a partnership deal between Psion Teklogix and Sagem Sécurité. An imminent new system from the pair, dubbed MorphoCheck, is said to allow authentication of ID-documents, including electronic passports, ID cards, driving licenses and other ID documents. They describe it as a mobile, autonomous, lightweight multimodal terminal, capable of scanning 2D barcodes by reading the MRZ band via an OCR (optical character recognition) swipe reader, or reading embedded electronic chips. It can also send all this information to a remote central server.

IDF looks to install biometric ID systems at West Bank agricultural crossings
A year after installing biometric systems at checkpoints throughout the territories, the IDF plans to begin using the advanced identification technology at "agricultural crossings" used by Palestinians to pass through the West Bank security barrier to enter and work their fields. "The vision is to have carousel gates that open and close automatically after the Palestinian is checked by the biometric systems," a high-ranking Civil Administration officer told The Jerusalem Post on Monday. "If this happens, we might even be able to reach a stage that a soldier will only have to be there to ensure that the Palestinian is not carrying any explosives or weaponry."

Irish police force to deploy biometric system
27.11.2007 - The Garda Síochána and the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) have struck an agreement with mobile phone maker Motorola to deploy a biometric fingerprint-capture system. The deal will see ‘LiveScan’ units deployed at the Office of the Refugees Applications Commissioner. The units allow for the capture and exchange of fingerprint data on persons seeking asylum with the central EU fingerprint database, EURODAC. It is understood that subsequent phases deployed next year will provide for the capture and storing of a person’s fingerprints upon registration by the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) and also provide Garda immigration authorities with the ability to capture and store prints at ports of entry, including sea- and airports.

Korea will Fluggastdaten, Japan scannt bereits Fingerabdrücke

FDP will Fingerprint wieder abschaffen
