'We shouldn't rule out a way to protect people's identities'
ID cards are seen as a tool for dealing with terrorism but there is a debate about whether they are an encroachment on civil liberties. Are you still committed to pressing ahead with them? I think this debate has to be one where people can see where there's agreement as well as where there's been a debate that's led to disagreement. If someone said to you that I'm going to give you a better form of passport with biometrics and I'm going to include the current passport information in that; if someone said to you ... that if someone comes to this country as a foreign national, given the worries about illegal immigration, they should carry some form of identity, I think most people would agree. And I think we've got to get the debate about, if you like the management, the identity management to a reasonable level.

Asian banks go micro with biometrics
Banks in the region are turning to smart cards and biometrics to boost their microfinance operations, according to a new report from IDC's Financial Insights. The study revealed that the successes of banks such as Grameen Bank in providing sustainable microfinancing schemes, have spurred others in the region to grow their microfinance operations. The report cited Indonesia's PT Bank Danamon and India's ICICI Bank, as two examples that rely on biometric and smart card technologies to alleviate the high costs of administering microfinance and to expand such operations.

Ont. government invests $5 million in acoustic imaging research
WINDSOR, Ont. - The University of Windsor will establish an institute for diagnostic imaging research with a $5 million boost from the Ontario government. The institute will work with the private sector to develop acoustical imaging processes for the automotive, health care and public safety sectors. Industry estimates peg the global market for acoustical imaging, which uses sound to analyze objects without damaging them, at $21 billion. Applications for this technology include medical diagnostics and non-intrusive biometric identification systems for use in the security field. Research and Innovation Minister John Wilkinson says the funding will help make Windsor a focal point for research and innovation in the field.

Is it or isn't it? Brown keeps bottling the ID card question
For the third time in four days, Gordon Brown has sown doubts about the future of compulsory ID cards for UK citizens. Speaking at prime minister's question time today, Brown confirmed that it was "policy" for ID cards to become compulsory, but added the rider that this was subject to a vote in parliament. As indeed is the case, but speaking to the Observer on Sunday, Brown had said that under the government's "proposals" there was "no compulsion for existing British citizens." When Tory leader David Cameron queried this in the Commons today, Brown responded that "it has to be voted on by parliament", his apparent contention being therefore that there is no current compulsion, the government would like compulsion, but that compulsion nevertheless cannot exist until parliament has said that it will. Or something like that.

Überwachung immer und überall

Schengen in Freiheit
