FBI proposes international biometrics database UK police are in talks with the FBI about establishing an international biometric database for tracking down the world's most wanted criminals and terrorists.
The so-called "server in the sky" database would share criminals' biometric data, such as fingerprints and iris scans, internationally.
The FBI suggested the database at a meeting of five countries — Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US — in the International Information Consortium technology group.
The UK's National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) said it was aware of the proposal and that any such system could be linked into existing law-enforcement databases such as Ident1, the UK repository of more than seven million pieces of biometric data from crime scenes, although there are no formal plans at the moment.
Integrated Security Traditional security and risk management practices examine and confront potential threats to an organization by defining them and assigning appropriate measures and technologies to address each threat. Such classifications are often meant as stand-alone solutions to deal with specific situations and mitigate damage without impacting the organization as a whole.
Integrated security represents a different approach and involves the convergence of physical, electronic, and information technology (IT) programs with operational systems, such as building maintenance, fire and life safety, and HVAC. When properly planned, this type of coordination makes the organization better able to recover from a disruption.

Nine out of ten Belgians trust biometrics for identity verification According to a survey conducted by Unisys in seven European countries, 89% of the Belgian interviewees find “[it is] acceptable for a trusted organization such as [a] bank, credit card provider, health care provider or governmental organization to use biometrics such as [their] voice or fingerprints to verify [their] identity”. The Belgian respondents’ primary reasons for this overwhelmingly positive attitude towards biometrics are more convenience (73%), better security (42%), higher speed of the identity verification process (45%) and privacy protection (15%).
Ranked by acceptance, Belgium is followed by France (86%), Sweden (81%), The Netherlands (73%), Germany (68%) and Italy (61%).
Two years ago, Dexia Bank of Belgium launched a speaker verification system for its private banking customers. My role in this project included general speech technology assistance to the project leader, expectation management, VUI development, technical integration of the speaker verfication engine with the application, and usability testing.
Selecting the right security system for SMEs Security has always been a compromise between potential risk and the justification of cost. However the emphasis is starting to change from viewing what happened - CCTV - to preventing it happening – Access Control. With Health and Safety legislation together with good practice Business Continuity Planning, the protection of people, buildings and property has become a boardroom issue.
Usually physical security matters are the responsibility of the security officer or facilities manager whilst network or access control security software is the responsibility of the IT manager who has a very different set of priorities which include maintaining enough bandwidth on the system to keep it functioning efficiently. In the past this priority has not always been compatible with network based security software because of the bandwidth required to keep the systems in operation 24/7.

Austrian private hospital chain goes biometric Barmherzige Brüder (“Merciful Brothers”), Austria’s largest private hospital organisation, is beginning to roll out a biometric fingerprinting system to control access to IT systems.
The new system will allow hospital staff to access with hospital information system (HIS) without a password.
Siemens IT Solutions and Services has installed the system at the Krankenhaus der Barmherzigen Brüder in Graz, and it claims that it will be both more secure and more convenient.
Siemens IT Solutions and Services has integrated the Siemens ID Center software into the existing Citrix-based hospital system and installed PC mice with a sensor.
Users register once by placing both index fingers on the fingerprint sensor of the mouse. To subsequently log on and unlock the screen saver, or access specially protected data, users then simply tap the sensor and are logged on in less than a second.

Call for papers: Automated Biometric Technology and its Applications Automated biometric technology has attracted significant attention from both academia and industry. Biometric features can be retinas, irises, fingerprints, hand geometries, signatures, audio, faces, palm prints, ears, gait, DNA, etc. Choice of biometric features depends on factors such as accuracy, robustness, sensor size and cost. Numerous theoretical and implementation advances have made automatic biometric authentication not only technically feasible, but also economically practical. Automated biometric systems have been widely used in many applications such as surveillance, digital libraries, forensic work, law enforcement, human computer intelligent interaction, and banking. For applications requiring higher levels of security, biometrics can be integrated with other authentication means such as smart cards and passwords.
This special issue is aimed at introducing novel pattern recognition techniques applied to biometric authentication and identification, state-of-the-art methods for biometric sensing, and social impacts of biometric technology. Researchers are invited to submit their original papers to this special issue. Papers of both theoretical and practical application nature are welcome. Authoritative reviews of the state of the art and directions for future research in the field are also welcome.

Security programs push forward; will 2008 be the year for biometrics? Catherine J. Tilton,
Vice President, Standards and Emerging Technology,
Daon
This has been an interesting year for biometrics, with a number of high-profile government programs being awarded and/or deployed, both within the US and internationally.
In the US, the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) began deployment for maritime workers, the US Registered Traveler (RT) program was rolled out to numerous airports, the US-VISIT program is scheduled to begin its ten-print pilot by year end, and many anxiously await the award of the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system this year as well.
Internationally, the EU Biometric Matching System (BMS), Japan VISIT, and UK e-Borders awards are noteworthy, and all eyes are on the UK as it moves forward on its biometrically-enabled National Identity Scheme (NIS).
Commercial sales are also up with some impressive milestones (e.g., Authentec’s 25 millionth sensor), but it's still not where we’d like to see it overall, such as being embraced by the financial sector....

America — founded by dissenters A billion dollars has been expended by the federal government for the FBI’s Next Generation Identification Program.
As it is currently structured, this latest invasion into personal privacy will collect biometric information on millions of Americans. Digital images of faces, personality profiles, palm prints, earlobe shapes, iris scans, DNA imprints and fingerprints will be stored in a gargantuan, underground FBI facility near the nation’s capital. In the coming years, the FBI plans to expand the program to include such information as the way people walk and talk. National ID cards will give law-enforcement agencies the means to identify people both at home and abroad. ...
