Japan seeks to standardize biometric ID method for ATMs Daily Yomiuri: Japan's Financial Services Agency has proposed the standardization of biometric identification systems to confirm account holders' identities when they use ATMs.

Identity theft Sir, As the House of Lords prepares to examine the Government’s ID Cards Bill, my company’s research shows that four in five British people accept that biometric information on ID cards, such as fingerprints or facial scans, is the most secure and certain way of proving their identity.
Technology is undoubtedly the key to thwarting identity theft (reports, March 3) and there is no scientific evidence to demonstrate that any technology other than biometrics is better for verifying identities. However, according to our research, half the population is worried about the security of the proposed ID card. The biometric technologies involved have not been proved on the necessary scale required for the UK’s national identity scheme.

Flaws found in proposed Cebu ID system Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña has found some flaws in the proposed Cebu provincial identification system.
Osmeña said the ID system is flawed because a loophole in the system can be exploited and make it possible for anyone to acquire two ID cards under different names.
To check for possible duplicity, the personnel that would be assigned to process the issuance of the ID cards would have to compare an ID to approximately two million files of Cebu registrants.
AuthenTec introduces new biometric sensor AuthenTec Inc., an innovator and manufacturer of biometric fingerprint sensors, is introducing a new sensor that it says is the world's smallest, most powerful and versatile biometric sensor.
The Melbourne-based company says its EntrePad 1510 product is about one-third smaller than other sensors and combines high level security with a host of touch-powered features for cell phones at a cost of about $4 each.

CIA Venture Group And Motorola Arm Invest In Emerging 3-D Biometrics Joint-development effort should result in lower biometric-device manufacturing costs, miniaturized biometric cameras, and improved products.
An emerging area of biometric-security technology got a lift Monday when a CIA-backed venture group and the venture-capital arm of Motorola Inc. disclosed about $6 million in investments in A4Vision Inc., a provider of 3-D facial-scanning and -recognition software and equipment.

Microsoft targets passwords with biometric keyboard Microsoft has reacted to concerns over the inconvenience of passwords with the launch of a keyboard which uses biometrics to log on users to websites.
The keyboard includes a fingerprint reader which will enable users to store their biometric ID and use that as authentication when logging onto password protected sites – having stored the passwords locally on the device.
Microsoft claims the Optical Desktop Elite with Fingerprint Reader for Bluetooth "offers the nation's PC users a way of managing their passwords without having to remember them".
But the issue of security is one Microsoft, perhaps jaded by past criticism, neatly avoids.
