Review: ThinkPad Z60m
Notebooks with honking-big LCDs sure aren't what they used to be. At least, not with Lenovo's ThinkPad Z60m. Sure, this 16:9 (wide screen) 15.4-inch WXGA display notebook is bigger than your average notebook, but it pays you back in several useful ways. And the Z60m is nowhere near as big or hefty as the earlier rounds of wide-screen WXGA notebooks released by other manufacturers, some of which looked more like shrunken desktop PCs than notebooks

Biometrics calm US web shoppers
Biometric scanners could alleviate fears of online identity theft, according to an IBM survey. Forty-nine per cent of US survey respondents said biometric technology, such as a fingerprint scanner, would help people feel more comfortable shopping on the internet. One-third (32 per cent) of the 1,000 people surveyed said an iris scanner could also help to quell fears. Two in five people (40 per cent) said sophisticated encryption technology and something that would protect signatures from forgery would also make people feel more secure.

Chamber approves introduction of passports with biometric data
PRAGUE- The Czech Republic will soon introduce passports with a digital photo portrait and a digital fingerprint of the holder, under the bill that the Chamber of Deputies passed with the aim to increase passports safety standards. Digital photos should appear in Czech passports during the year 2006 and fingerprints probably by mid-2008. The bill applies to new passports. The old ones will remain valid until their date of expiry. The new bill keeps the current possibility for people to apply for a passport valid for one year at the most that is issued within a shorted deadline. This type of passport will not contain the biometric data.

Home secretary sets out business case for ID cards
Home secretary Charles Clarke says private sector business stands to see up to £425m worth of benefits from his department’s national scheme for biometric identity cards. But a 21 per cent rise in the cost of ordinary passports, partly to pay for biometric preparations that will also underpin ID cards, has sparked renewed attacks on the Home Office proposals. The cost increase emerged as former MI5 chief Stella Rimington warned that ID cards will not make the UK any safer from terror attacks, and will be ‘absolutely useless’ unless they are completely unforgeable.

Biometric systems popular with condo buyers
With crime rising, an increasing number of condominiums are being equipped with biometric security systems able to identify people by scanning their faces, fingerprints or other physical characteristics. Biometric technology is currently used at nuclear power plants, research institutes and other facilities requiring high security. Now condominiums touting their enhanced safety features are incorporating the technology to attract singles and two-income families. Japan General Estate Co. began selling condominiums in 2004 whose entrances come equipped with automatic locks and a biometric security system that identifies residents by scanning their irises.
